The name Larry Hawkins is synonymous with hundreds of youth who grew up in South Glens Falls during the 1960s and 1970s.

An outstanding athlete in his own right, Larry graduated in 1959 after a stellar high school career. A rare four-sport athlete, he lettered in football, basketball, wrestling and baseball.

Larry could play any sport he wished and joined the school’s first wrestling team his senior year. In this historic season, Larry was 13-1. All of his 13 wins were by pinning his opponent — an amazing feat. Baseball was arguably his finest sport.

After graduating from high school, Larry would work and live in South Glens Falls for most of his adult life. His focus became the youth of the community by forming the first Middle League Baseball team to represent South Glens Falls and becoming the Director of the Saturday Morning basketball program. Hall of Famer Ron Lennox, high school basketball coach at the time, entrusted Larry to run the Saturday Morning Basketball program at the Hudson Avenue gym. Every Saturday, no matter the weather, the gym was open and kids were there having fun, learning and developing their basketball skills. He would run the program for over 20 years.

The success of Coach Lennox’s championship teams, during the 60s, can be traced back to the efforts of Larry.

During same time he was running the Saturday Morning Basketball, Larry would also work area high school basketball games, as a first-class referee. His fairness to all would become his trademark.
